Getting Ready for IPv6
IPv6 is the Internet's long-overdue next generation protocol. It offers many technical advantages, but the most pressing need IPv6 addresses is the address-space exhaustion problem we face with the current version of the protocol (IPv4).
Address Space Exhaustion
The current format for Internet Protocol addresses (think of street addresses on the Internet) allows for a maximum of 4,294,967,296 hosts (think of homes). Although this may seem like a lot of hosts, the explosive popularity of the Internet means we're consuming these addresses at an alarming rate.
Once most of these addresses have been consumed, economic forces will drive the cost of new addresses to new highs. Without IPv6, deploying new web sites will suffer the burden of new expense.
IPv6 offers us more than ten billion billion billion times the number of available host addresses that IPv4 offers. This new address space (and the many other features IPv6 offers) will enable a new generation of connected devices. Businesses ready to take advantage of the new markets IPv6 opens up will speak to countless consumers with new gadgets.
